An Owl in the Night

Night Owl, by Bregelle Whitworth Davis

Good news everyone, there's going to be a party soon. But before I tell you about that, this painting relates to the party that I'm going to be telling you about in just a moment. The painting was a Christmas gift from my wife. It totally caught me off guard. She's been painting and painting like mad to get everything done for the event I'm about to tell you about. With all her preparations I didn't expect to receive a painting of my own.
Now, I know you have all been waiting to find out about the good news party. It just so happens to be an opening for Bregelle...get this, during the huge Sundance Festival in Park City, Utah. My little painting is an example of her style of work. If you want to see more of her work, click here. When will this awesome event happen? January 23 and 24 at the Silver Queen Gallery in Park City, bottom level of the Silver Queen Hotel on the Historic Main Street. There will be music and food, so if you are in the area, please feel free to stop by. Oh yes, the hours that we will be there are as follows: 6-9 both nights.

A better picture

Good news everyone! My wonderful wife took some photos of my Panda painting and made it look better then the one that I have posted below. So to take advantage of her skills I'm posting the better one.

Were the holidays good for everyone this year? My vacation time was spent inside the dwelling of my in-laws. This was not because they were keeping me there as a house servant, cleaning and cooking, and assisting in such tasks as being the chimney broom. I helped out around the house out of my own free will. The main reason was, well two fold. Fold one involved the outlandish amounts of cold air lurking just outside the window. With that cold air was lots of unfriendly snow. It really didn't seem to want to play with me, it melted and soaked my clothing whenever I sat in it or kicked it. The second fold was out of my control. The cause of which is the fact that I have no self control when there is a shiny new game system to play with. You read right. I played alot of games. At least some involved exercise, I was able to burn off a small amount of the sugar I inhaled from the vast supply of sweets sitting on the counters. So for the sake of my wife, don't think about getting me a game system anytime soon. Also, I started a my vision of the cover to the book "A Horse and His Boy" by C.S. Lewis. I have started it, now to the hard part, finishing it. So, all in all, it was a good time and I'm looking forward to next year being just as much fun.

Can you believe this junk?

Image belongs to and created by, Brad Holland

Bad news everyone. The Graphic Artists Guild or gag, I mean GAG, is suing prominent artist Brad Holland and others for, get this-defamation. Are they serious? Sounds like they really are out for the best interest of fellow artists...or themselves. Whichever is the easiest I'm sure. At any rate, if any artists or people who like art or just hate frivolous and hateful lawsuits meant as intimidation, please join the petition. Click here and email your name in to help out and put a stop to an unjust lawsuit! Stand up and make yourself heard, this lawsuit needs to stop.

On a mountain top the panda did roam

Hello, it's that time of the year that all the established sci-fi and fantasy artists get together and submit their work to Spectrum. At the same time, anyone else who thinks they know how to draw a dragon tries to enter as well. Needless to say, I have to enter, getting into Spectrum would be a dream come true. Although I don't think that I'll put in a dragon, how about the next best thing? A panda! So this is my entry into Spectrum. It was a good way for me to practice (don't we all need to be practicing all the time?) painting mountains and animals, together. Oh yeah. Word. The image isn't that great, I'll have a better one up tomorrow or the next day, along with some process shots. I started with a charcoal drawing, painted it with gouache and finished it with acrylic. I spent about 2 weeks on it, not too bad, can I just say how much I like paint? Keep watching for more to come!

It's your birthday!

Happy birthday Mom! Happy birthday Tonia! I wanted to join Anna for the great blogging well wishing extravaganza of wishing you happy birthday and many happy returns of the day.

Mom, you have always given me memorable times in my life and that's why Bregelle and I miss you, if it wasn't for you wanting to take us home and homeschooling me, I would never have seen a turtle lay eggs, caught as many snakes, or read as well as I do. English is still my strongest subject on tests and next to art in school. I blame you for the artists curse (sorry Dad, but I don't think it came from your side of the family). You not only taught me at a young age to draw; which is one of my earliest memories of drawing. I remember sitting in the back of the chapel in church and you showed me how to draw a house. I drew houses that way for many years, I was on about 6 at the time. I can't thank you enough for the unwavoring support you've always given me. I wanted to say thank you and I hope you have the best birthday yet!

Tonia, I hope Ben bought you something nice. Happy birthday to you. I just wanted to say that you are my favorite sister-in-law. I really miss seeing you and the rugrats (that includes my brother). You have been a great inspiration to me since we first met. You are strong, persistent, and really fun to hang around with (despite having more knowledge of Willow). Bregelle and I both miss you and not just because you make us great food when we visit and have adorable kids. Happy Birthday!

Political stuff, I know I know...

Ok, I read this article by Orson Scott Card, a Democrat, about his feelings about Obama and the financial crisis that we "suddenly" fell into. If you are curious about who and why this happened and wonder how we didn't see this coming, it's a really good article to read. So here is the link, read it, no matter what side of the asile you stand on.

The best Sunday activity yet

What do you do on a Sunday in the city? Why you make toys, of course! I designed them, if you could tell, I think it shows. I know that the bulgey eyes and such are a little cliche, but it just looks so darn fun. Can you guess which one I made and which one was made by the wife? I'll give you a hint, she's had a lot more practice at this sort of thing then myself. The squid is called "Quinton" and I haven't named the blob other then "Blob Boy the Third". I thought that I would put in the thumbnails that we made them from, only about 1 inch by 2 inches. I have other ideas for toys like "Drag Along Johnny" and others I don't feel like talking about. See ya'll later!

My new shoes

Good news everyone, I have painted my own shoes. They are now much more fun to look at then the plain white fabric they were when I took them from the store. It took a month or two to figure out what I wanted them to look like, but they now look back at me nicely.

Patchy-ness fun

I don't know what the book is going to be like, but I like the author and thought I would submit my idea for the assignment. In a nutshell, it's a patch for a military group whose nick name is "the Exterminators" and they fight monsters. The author is Scott Sigler, he's pretty good, you know, not all that bad. Really he's pretty good. So I hope I win the little contest, that would rock. Good night.

Help out and cast your vote!

Hi, I should have done this a long time ago, sorry Cass. Cass or James, is my brother-in-law and a graphic designer of some note. He entered into a time sensitive contest and needs our help. To win the contest at the t-shirt design website, design by humans, he needs your help. Please click here to see his cool shirt design. Log in and vote on it. Trust me, while there won't be any dancing leprechauns, you'll have a warm fuzzy feeling very similar in nature clogging green clad midgets. Everyone will have to hurry, voting ends on the 8th of September. That's only 3 days away!

Having some fun

Well, last week my wonderful wife won an art contest in our town, one of the prizes was a long board. I've never had a long board before and since I've snowboarded and skated for a while, it would be a snap to learn. As I played around on small hills with small inclines, I felt pretty good about myself. On the way to work, I started down a fairly steep hill...it made my board go into some speed wobbles. Basically I was like a suburban teenager who couldn't hold his liquor. I tipped and I slid and I left a small trail of DNA on the pavement. I'll let the pictures tell the rest of my story.

A puke story

This is a touching story of a husband holding the hair of his wife as she goes through opiate withdrawl. I'm not trying to be sarcastic either, the story ends with her husband whispering "I love" between each bout of vomiting. It's a story I can really relate too.

It was fun to draw, I love pen and ink. Also, I like drawing toilets too, so this was a winner in my book. I just hope commonties likes it too. I would write more on the deep ponderings of my mind but I went to bed last night at like 4 am cause I was watching the movie, The Four Feathers. We just got it and I didn't want to wait till a normal time to view it. I can be fairly impatient at times, a shocking revealation for those of you who know me. At any rate, I think I'm going to rumage through my bag for some food of some kind, I'm really hungery and no, it's not the "munchies".

He was a bad seed...

James Gurney has a little game that he plays on his blog every Wed. I made this in a couple of hours and I have to post it before my hot water is done boiling. I snagged some new tea from my little sister that I'm really excited to try out. It's a berry zinger tea, really exciting, I can't wait. Oh, there goes the teapot. Toooot. I'm out of here.
I'm back, I hope no one minds that I have used this for two things. But the guy really does look like a bad seed, I mean, what's his problem? So she's got a tail, who didn't at sometime in their life? It's a shame that a beatiful woman with a prehensil tail can't enjoy a meal in a dinner without whispers about her parents and questions about how her skirt works with that tail...

If you want to see more Poe, here you go.

Sorry for the lame rhyming, but I just can't help it. It's not my fault, I watched "The Princess Bride" way to many times when I was a child (I even had a rat tail like Wesley dear). I happen to have finished a new study for the graphic novel that is still in the process of getting started. I had a really good time doing the splatters. Can I tell you how great it is having a good model around to use, it makes drawing a pleasure.

Geuss what? I have two now!

A funny thing happened, the first version was supposed to be a female not a dude. So I was contacted and told that a gender change was in order. A few hours later, in Photoshop, the operation was completed. I put them together to show the difference that a little time and effort can make. It's a fairly sad story about a lady that had to tell her brother some very bad news about his wife, happily it all turns out okay in the end. Let me know what you think.

This is the colored version of the previous post. When I have time I'll write more :)

I've got another one

Once again I have been accepted and posted on www.commonties.com . To see the actual post, please follow the following link,
http://www.commonties.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/shesgone.jpg It's a sad little blurb about the passing of a young girls grandmother.

Homage of the Druids

On the high day of the year, after the sun has fallen to sleep, they gather at their holy places. The ancient rituals they have been preparing for all year will finally be preformed. With careful and precise movements they unwrap the sharpened tools and stone knives, the victims have recievied their drugs and are in the proper state of delirium. As the fire gathers it's strength and the sparks ascend upwards; the dark chants of ancient times can be heard across the fields. The homage of the Druids has begun...

New thang I'm working on

Good news everyone, I'm starting a new drawing/painting. This one is also for commonties.com. I hope the feeling of dread comes across. And I know that there are a few things that I need to work on in his face, which will be fixed in the finished version. Peace out ya'll.

It's a go!

Good news everyone, I am published on the web. It's not even my own site. It's a site called commonties.com, do you want to see what they bought from me? http://commonties.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/falsepositive.jpg Go there now! It's a little diddy about a poor intern that thought he had recieved HIV from the vomit of a patient. I posted the image a few posts down the page, so you could look at it there. But why look at it here on my blog when you could see it with the words of the story to go with it?

Snowboarding

Good news everyone! Bregelle and I made it mostly unharmed from our day snowboarding at Sun Valley. Oh my yes, it was a beautiful day to be out in the open air. I took some pictures to show you all and also a video.

The Theory of Flight, a finished work of art

It's too early in the morning for me to be witty about my descriptions, perhaps after a few hours of sleep. Thanks for looking.

The Theory of Flight, a work in progress

Flight, one of man's greatest accomplishments. Some day we may even get to have our own personal flight devices. That'd be a fun day...anyways, just thought that I would post my works in progress. I should have it finished tonight, I just needed a break.

The Phone Call

I would have to say that the colors are a little dark with this piece, but I hope the story gets across anyways. I don't have the time to write it out, but it's not happy. Also, this is my first watercolor I've done in about 6 years, just thought I would throw that out there, you know...

At last, it is finished

Good news everyone, it's a fantastic day in the neighborhood. After many hours, I could hit ctrl+S and finish this little diddy. If I ever end up standing on street corners under the overpass, this is the sign to hold; or when I am looking for work. Sometimes I feel like this, hoping for anything to come my way, mostly meatball subs...those things rock.

Have you ever gotten a gift that makes you feel so cool that you have to tell everyone about it? Well for my birthday, my wife did an amazing thing, she listened to what I wanted for my birthday and found this pen pictured. It's a Pentel Pocket Brush Pen. She could only find it in one store in like, Minn. or some place like that. How crazy is that? I would say almost as crazy as me with only 2.567834 hours of sleep. Oh yeah. Anyways, this is what it looked like before I put the ink in, now it's all black. If ninjas used ink instead of blood to write with, they would use this pen. That's how freaking cool it is.

Ps-I drew all the line work in my, Griswold piece with it in like 5 mins, soo cool! Best pen ever...

Dinner? Anyone? Awww come on!

I know that church is not always the best place to be drawing...but I think that's a false tradition of stern people who can't draw. I have great ideas whilst I'm sitting on de bench listening to the speakers. In fact, I drew a funny little man that thinks he's a chef, but never found the right hat for the job. But he thought to himself, "With a mouth this big, how could I not love food?" And so he went on the become the Zinc Saucee' in the Iron Chef TV contest. Heartwarming isn't it?

Elks are Us

Good news everyone! I recently started a painting of the noble and tasty North American deer called, the elk. It's still in the "rough" stage, but soon I'll have it ironed out like an aging actress after botox. I plan on having it finished by the end of 2 weeks. It'll be a rather large painting, 24ishX36ish. The exciting part comes from never painting animals before. Why, I hardly ever drew an animal before. I like people, they out weird animals everyday. I say this because I don't know if I have ever actually met a normal person. Have you?

Griswold's confession

The dark secrets of Poe's last week alive will be revealed in the near future. It's a sinister tale of forbidden rites and a bleak underworld, as told by his editor, Rufus W. Griswold. The text was written by a very accomplished author named Otis Twelve. It's part of a full length novel that makes for a terrific read.

I finally found my way out of that pile of leaves...and did a little bit more on this. So I thought, what's the first thing to do when I get out of a pile of leaves? Post my progress. If anyone (that means the 2 people that look at my blog) knows Bregelle, does this look like her?

Look! Another new post! hurray!

Here what things look like a few hours later, I hope that you can tell a difference. I was originally painting this to send out as a thank you card for my wedding...yeah...I know that was a year or so ago, but hey, if you gave us something you just might get one...someday...

working working working, like a busy little bee

This is a little thing I've been working on for a little while now. I thought I would post some "work in progress" pics.

a little tiny tree on a post-it note

I looked out the window and what did I see? A great big scary dead tree.

Thursday, November 08, 2007

White hats are all the rage.

All along the trail, a ghostly moan was to be heard. The travelers peered over their shoulders constantly till one by one they walked into the trees that lined the path through the deep woods. Till only Pepe' was left standing and staring all around in the dark. Suddenly a ghostly face moaned in front of his own quivering face.....Actually, this is what a zombie would look like if it was wearing a white fur hat in a snow storm.

rhinos in full color

I didn't want to go to sleep yet so I thought I would stay up a little later and play with color. It's not done yet, but it's a start. The only problem with this first coloring is that it seems to lose some of the pop it had as black and white. Any thoughts about that?

Sunday, November 04, 2007

rhinos

This is a little study of some rhinos. I'm trying out a new technique and tool. The new tool is the Pentel color brush. It's pretty weird to work with at first, but it's getting a little easier. I still have to color it.

Poor lonely giant

The poor guy, all these other people are getting married and he's stuck with only his overalls and lumps. Maybe some day, a princess will drop down and sweep him off his feet.

Momentum

At last, I finished another IF project. I admit it, I thought of Calvin and Hobbes with this topic as they careened towards impending pain on their little red sled. I hope that I'll have something for you to see next week!

Arrgh, it's the Captain...

I really liked the topic this week for Illustration Friday, so I sat myself down (after I put on Bourne Identity) and started drawing. A few hours later, my drawing for this week's topic "Captain".

Toilet Monster

This is my latest digital piece, I was up all night working on it, does that show?? heeheehee...hahahaha...ah.ah..ha...

Monday, May 14, 2007

I thought that I would show off one of my latest BFA project pieces. This is for the poem "The Raven" by Edgar Allen Poe.

Friday, December 08, 2006

This called Exile of Light. It's a self-portrait that I think fits the topic.
