My newest toy

Product plug. This little gizmo is something I've been waiting for a few weeks to get. It makes tea and has a clever name. Its the way it makes tea that's special. Theres plenty of room for the tea leaves to expand and release more flavor. The test tea is a rooibos strawberry pepper we bought in Scottsdale, Az. Brewed in a tea ball the pepper and strawberry flavors were hidden. This time I can taste the strawberry and pepper and the overall flavor is much stronger. The best part is that the filter catches all the drifters who usually escape with a traditional tea ball. Go tea!

a big surprise

Good news everyone! My mother still knows I'm technically alive. My wife sent me a text message today informing me that I had a mysterious package from my mother waiting for me at home. Mail for me that doesn't ask for money comes along rarely. Naturally I was horrified that it was going to be hours until I could get home to open my package. upon arrival to my apartment, the large envelope was handed to me and was quickly opened. And what to my bewildered eyes did I behold? A shirt. I laughed very hard when I unfolded it and saw the graphic. This is the second surprise shirt she sent me from a site called threadless.com. She has pretty good taste when picking out hipster ironic graphic tees for me. I'm always floored, first that she remembers what I like after all these years and second that she knows about threadless. I just think that is very cool. The shirt is nice too :)So in conclusion, thanks mom, the shirt is great!

Pencil work

Good news everyone, a friend of mine got married. I drew this as their wedding present. It's them. I think it turned out very well. It was fun to render something in graphite again, it's been a really long time since I've taken the time to finish something like this picture.

da Bear

This is a bear we saw in Yellowstone. I wanted to try out this new blogger app when I saw it and post it like live you know? But Tmobile gets absolutely, no service. I didn't even get any data service in West Yellowstone, which isn't the biggest town, but its a major tourists town...anyways, enough whining about cell service, we saw 12 bears, 4 wolves, and a lot of food animals.

Finally...sheesh...

Good news everybody! I finally finished my Hellboy Munny. It's a little four inch guy that is a mutant, I traded the body of a Raffy for the body of a classic munny. I think that it turned out pretty good, so I totally needed to show him off. I can't wait to get another one to work over. Here's some of the specs, the right hand of Doom is sculpted out of scultpty, the tail is made out of sculpty, and the horns are were actually already part of the head, I just cut them down. So there he is, all finished.

Ripple

Bad news everybody, there's oil out in them waves. There's this lady that wants to help by getting a bunch of people together using Illustration Fridays vast amount of submitters to do a small piece of artwork and donate it. For a small fee of only $10 (which goes to charity) you then get to have then art work that you liked. There's more details on her blog. As you can tell, I drew a pelican fighting to free itself from the oil. I saw pictures of pelicans coated in the sludge, making them look like pathetic, melting statues. There's a fighting spirit to clean up the spill quickly. From Gov. Bobby Jindal creating barrier islands to Kevin Costner's centrifuges down to the hundreds of volenters throwing out their backs shoveling sand, people are uniting to help clean up the Gulf.

Etsy sale!

Good news everyone! I'm having a sale on my Etsy shop. Here are the fun details: All items have free shipping and most have reduced prices. The sale is only going to be for 2 weeks, so don't hesitate to get over to my Etsy shop and get your favorite print or Altoids tin. It's not going to last forever. I'll be adding a few more prints over the next couple of days, such as the Gumshoe and Calculations to name a few.

More work in progress

Good news everyone, I decided to post some more work in progress photos of my vulture and a weekend project, my first large custom Munny. The head is from the "Raffy" figure and the body is a classic munny body. There's still allot of work to be done on both, but I thought that it would be fun to show off what I've gotten done so far. Also, thanks to the_jcw for making my dunny possible.

Here's a little something I've been cooking (WIP)

To go along with the panda known as, The Gumshoe, I'm working on this creature. I haven't totally decided whether to make it a boy or a girl vulture. It's a rich vulture none the less. This creature could also be the villain in the story. Sort of the Gumshoe's Moriarty. A little about the process, I painted this in Photoshop and then I'm going to paint it on a panel traditionally. What does everyone think?

Having fun on the web

Good news everyone, I was told about this site from my friend at work. He makes more abstract images, I can't do that, so I took this tool called Mr.doob and wanted to see what kind of illustrations I could make with it. Using the long fur "brush" I made a very nice barren landscape with desolate furry looking trees. I can't remember what I used for the second drawing, but I felt like making something with a great big eye.
This is interesting, the tools take away the ability to know what you were going to make before hand. There's really no way to plan out your project, but I think that's the whole point. It's not really a permanent form of creating artwork. You can save the image, but it's only at the resolution of the screen you are using. What's interesting to me is the varied forms that people create, from deer to owls to squids. And that's if you want to make it closer to the realm of realism. My friend's work is impressive in it's minimalism.

Here's another little thing

Good news everyone, water colors and I still get along. This painting was one I was waiting to post. I waited and waited, it was my mother's birthday present. As it was a present, posting was not an option until she got it in the mail. Her birthday is in Oct. I think I sent it to her in November. It might have been in December. Then the picture decided to move itself around on my computer so I couldn't find it. Finally, I located it. Found something that's been alluding me for awhile, spare time. I put the two together and now it's on the great world web. The bear reference, I took myself. It was at Glacier Point in Yosemite Nat. Park. We were leaving the look out and spotted this guy up on the embankment of the parking lot. It was probably about 15 feet above us, poor guy was shaggy and hot. He sat there and panted in the summer heat. I felt very glad to be pink and hairless. To be honest, I embellished the lighting, but that's the wonderful part of being the artist.

Something fun happened

This post is a little late in coming. But I do have good news. For those of you who knew about it, I had a shirt printed on a site called Riptapperal.com. In December they posted a review of all the shirts that they printed over the year 2009. Apparently, with the help of everyone that supported me and my shirt, I made it into the top ten best shirts of the year. They posted links on facebook and have a little video. If you don't want to watch the whole thing, my shirt is at 2:30 in. Also, pay attention to the :30 point, my brother-in-law's shirt made it on the video. Thank you to everyone who bought one and everyone who told friends about the shirt.

Renewal

Good news everyone, I'm still technically alive. I have been inspired by this weeks Illustration Friday to get some quick drawing into my schedule. Once again, while sitting in church my pen started moving and a concept was put onto paper. The first thing that came to mind for this weeks topic (title of post :) was a phoenix. I'm including my thumbnail and then my rough draft, I like this one and I think I might take all the way a finished painting, but I think the skull in the foreground needs work. What do you think? Also, while I'm soliciting critiques, does anyone like the placement of the skull in the thumbnail better then the rough draft?
this is the thumbnail

this is the rough, drawn with pen and pencil, scanned from my sketch book
