Illustration Friday: Danger

Every now and then I like to participate in Illustration Friday. This week, the inspiration word is: Danger. I love danger! It makes things so much more fun then plain old, mildly exciting. My first thought was to do Danger Mouse, but I decided to kill two birds with one stone and used this week for my Monster Monday feature on Gagmen.net. I felt this was a good way to portray something that wasn't an in your face kind of danger, but more of a lurking potential danger!

Unicorn without a horn

This is an illustration I did for my brother in law. He has a funny podcast called, Gagmen. Its a podcast for the beleaguered Dungeon Master who needs some punch added to his/her campaign.  A group of comedians world build and explore crafting new ways to enhance the gaming experience.  Its also really funny and the production value is well done. After they finish beating a campaign to death, they post a pdf with art (hence my contribution) and words and everything for you to download! Go sign up and add this podcast to your que at www.gagmen.net.
The most recent episode has this illustration to go with the story.  I am pretty proud of it.  There are of course some issues that I think I could have done more with it, but overall I am happy with it. What is really fun, I drew and colored this completely from start to finish on my Galaxy Note 8. All the thumbnails and sketching started in my tablet. I used Sketchbook Pro as my drawing app. The S-pen stylus is great to work with. But it is a little skinny, I would like one that was a little thicker. So there you go, all digital, all done on a tablet.  Now go to www.gagmen.net and you can get a copy of it and a new campaign to nerd it up with your loved ones.

A new month is ahead of us.

Good news everyone! This is the first day of April. I was going to post a picture of me with a shaved head saying I've given up art to become a monk. But then I didn't. So instead of an April fool's prank, I figured I'd continue where my last post left off. Of course now that it's a new month, I'm going to post all my daily drawings from the last month including the ones I've already posted, because I think it would be fun to see them all together. The weird thing is that I started drawing, dare I say it, cute things toward the end of the month. I started with the word "Fresh" and drew a rat monster hanging fresh laundry up to dry. I ended the month with a bunny jumping for joy. Why the transition from monster to cute, I don't really know. It's baffling. Whatever the reason, it's been really fun to challenge myself to do a drawing a day and then share it. It's been enough fun that I am going to use Rhianna Wurman's list again for April. In May, I think I'll do my own list and maybe have a prize for someone who does a drawing EVERY day. We'll see about the prize, if you like the idea or hate it leave me a note in the comments. Without further ado and yammering, here are a months worth of doodles:

Freaky deaky clouds

Good news everyone! Cloud giants are going to eat us all. Though, if they are clouds we are more likely going to just get really damp and clammy. Yuck. Why do I know this? Because my friend from work, Camille Manetta took this picture from her front yard! That's how. Just look at the sloping forehead, the beady eyes, the ominous background. This cloud giant is up to no good. He's going to dampen all humanity with his misty teeth. Good bye everyone. At least until the wind disintegrates him and we are safe again.

Pencil work

Good news everyone, a friend of mine got married. I drew this as their wedding present. It's them. I think it turned out very well. It was fun to render something in graphite again, it's been a really long time since I've taken the time to finish something like this picture.

Finally...sheesh...

Good news everybody! I finally finished my Hellboy Munny. It's a little four inch guy that is a mutant, I traded the body of a Raffy for the body of a classic munny. I think that it turned out pretty good, so I totally needed to show him off. I can't wait to get another one to work over. Here's some of the specs, the right hand of Doom is sculpted out of scultpty, the tail is made out of sculpty, and the horns are were actually already part of the head, I just cut them down. So there he is, all finished.

New places to spend money

Good news everyone! One day soon you'll be able to have all your favorite artwork from me, on all sorts of products! I opened up a store (just click on the link) that prints art, skateboard decks, messenger bags etc. Tell your friends, get a bag for your flying squirrels to sleep in, buy a print for your aunt, the possibilities are endless. Right now I only have two things up, but check back and I should have more up soon.

A give away of sorts.

Cause this post is the bomb!

Wow, two postings in one night.

I don't know how far back this goes, but what I do know is that Anna started it, Tonia helped, and Whitney sucked me in. So here's the break down of my give away of sorts:

The first five people to comment on this post will get something made by me. It's my choice. For you. This offer does have some restrictions and limitations:

1. I make no guarantees that you will like what I make!
2. What I create will be just for you.
3. It'll be done this year (hopefully sooner than later.)
4. You will have no clue what it is going to be.
5. I reserve the right to do something extremely strange (would you expect anything else from me?)

There is a catch. Which is that you must re-post this on your blog (that means that if you want something from me, you must be willing to give something away yourself). The first 5 people to do so and leave a comment telling me you did will win a marvelous homemade gift by me! I also have to be able to contact you somehow, you can email me your email from this page. Ok, now post!

Fun in the Sundance

Good news everyone! There has finally been a sale at the gallery Bregelle shows in. There's a guy who was having a one day show and we went to go see it and there was the coveted red dot on one of her pieces! Whee! In case you were wondering, it was "Breakfast at Tiffany's" that sold. It was a whirlwind of excitement. We weren't sure that we were going to head out to Park City tonight, but it was a good thing that we did. While we were there Bregelle had the opportunity to talk with some collectors and other people interested in her work.

Ok, let me write about the show today, it was crazy. Very crazy. The artist showing is named Keith Bryce. He's a fashion designer and a former contestant on Project: Runway (which means he's a minor celebrity of sorts). Nice guy, cool ideas, styling glasses. As part of his show he dressed up some really funky looking models. I'll put in some pics of what one of them looked like. There was skin showing, antlers poking out of places, tall heels, and glitter I think...anyways, the cool thing about his shin-dig happened before we got there. The BBC and CNN along with a few other news networks had some camera crews in the gallery. So that's exciting. The pics in this post are some of the model, one of the walls with Bregelle's work, and a close up on the one that sold.

On a mountain top the panda did roam

Hello, it's that time of the year that all the established sci-fi and fantasy artists get together and submit their work to Spectrum. At the same time, anyone else who thinks they know how to draw a dragon tries to enter as well. Needless to say, I have to enter, getting into Spectrum would be a dream come true. Although I don't think that I'll put in a dragon, how about the next best thing? A panda! So this is my entry into Spectrum. It was a good way for me to practice (don't we all need to be practicing all the time?) painting mountains and animals, together. Oh yeah. Word. The image isn't that great, I'll have a better one up tomorrow or the next day, along with some process shots. I started with a charcoal drawing, painted it with gouache and finished it with acrylic. I spent about 2 weeks on it, not too bad, can I just say how much I like paint? Keep watching for more to come!

The best Sunday activity yet

What do you do on a Sunday in the city? Why you make toys, of course! I designed them, if you could tell, I think it shows. I know that the bulgey eyes and such are a little cliche, but it just looks so darn fun. Can you guess which one I made and which one was made by the wife? I'll give you a hint, she's had a lot more practice at this sort of thing then myself. The squid is called "Quinton" and I haven't named the blob other then "Blob Boy the Third". I thought that I would put in the thumbnails that we made them from, only about 1 inch by 2 inches. I have other ideas for toys like "Drag Along Johnny" and others I don't feel like talking about. See ya'll later!
